about

Recorded during the late summer and fall of 2005 in Taipei, Taiwan. When Myspace hit, finding a user-friendly site that streamed audio was kind of a big deal. I'd been hoping for something like that for years.I started publishing work as Doc Butcher & the Cardiac Arrest as soon as I heard about it.

These songs were recorded in a small bedroom in one of the most densely populated areas on Earth through one mic housed in a tiny MP3 player. (I was having trouble finding any audio equipment that worked, analog or digital.) From there, I EQ'ed in Audacity.

Over the course of four months, I produced about a dozen songs. I played on a Fender Strat Squier with a Big Muff Pi, an MXR Dyna Comp and a Digitech DigiDelay. I ran the Hammerhead drum sequencer through a subwoofer.

I had no confidence in my ability to sing. However, I loved King Missile and all those old William S. Burroughs albums. So I'd occasionally just talk over my tracks. Those were very well-received, but I considered myself a guitarist.

I'm re-releasing these now because I sat down and listened after ignoring them for over ten years. I found my playing to be satisfactory and most of the writing held up.

"The Work of Iron" was originally written by John Ruskin.
